I have had the question what is recessive longhair asked a few times and as a general rule those how ask there are 5 who don't but would like to know.

So Recessive longhair as you may or not know there are 3 coat types in the breed, Smooth, Long and Wire. Longhair coat is recessive to smooth, which means both parents must be longhair or carry the longhair in the gene in order to produce long coated progeny. Long hairs do not have a coat the is continuous like a Maltese or shih-tze they reach a certain length and stops growing.

What a big week it has been all puppies got a vet checked, micro-chipped, wormed and vaccinated on Saturday, all very healthy fat little puppies as per Gary the vet. All puppies got a lot of fuss and attention at the vet. On the way out we had to do a quick head count to make sure none ended up in an admirers handbag...(joke).

On Sunday I advertised the puppies for the 1st time. I have been uninitiated with phone calls and inquiries and have taken deposits from some very lovely excited families who we will finial get to meet IN LESS THEN 2 WEEKS!!! Laughing 2 puppies are going to the ACT and maybe a 3rd, I might have to start up a community page either on facebook or on this website so you can all meet up for play dates. Wink

Photos Photos gee puppies just wont sit still like they did a few weeks ago. They are eager to run, roll, explore and oh camera what dose that taste like??? I have to be quick or they lick the lens on me. This week puppy no1 our big boy was the one wanted to roll off the lounge and run and play (lucky there was a blanket on the floor). Puppy no8 our lil fluffy bum wanted to eat and managed to roll herself up in the fluffy pink blanket I use as a background setting. Puppy no5 Mr Chocolate Drops only wanted his behind taken...hmmm.

Weening and toilet training are going well this week. I make a beef meat loaf with brown rice they love it, 3 times a day with mums supplement is what they are eating. Puppies are kept inside, with 9 pups to train I cant get them outside to wee on the grass in time. Smaller litters are easier by far. By the time I put 3 or 4 in a basket to take outside of a morning the other puppies are already relieving themselves. I am using puppy training pads. I use towels for bedding and some old pillows, that is at the back of my laundry. In front of the bedding I have their wee pads 90% of wees are on the pads. All poos are on the pads, we do have a few accidents where as they start on the wee pads and they scoot backwards and miss the pad as I don't line the whole floor. But you can tell they tried and its a very good effort for a 5 week old puppy. I have always kept bedding very clean so the puppies are use to clean bedding.

Little puppies had a very scary interaction early this week, they had a little outside playtime with the older dachshunds and my husband got the mower and whipper-sniper out. Half the puppies were terrified by the noise. The other half were at first but with the older dachshunds accustomed to the noises they carried on like everything was fine. This encouraged some of the pups to come out from hiding near the door to safety back inside. I tried to reward those pups by playing with a squeaky toy which enticed a few more from hiding.

We have some big personalities developing within the pack. The chocolate boy wants to play with everyone and gets beaten' up by the girls and the large black boy is everyone friend and is the 1st to do everything but can't understand why the others can't keep up. The 2 small black boys crack me up. They are noticeably smaller then the other puppies but have the little dog complex. They have this serious bulldog stride, it is so cute. The 3 little longhairs are very placid, friendly and love human interaction, you can cradle them on their backs while their tails go 100 mile per hour. The black & chocolate are very pleasing on the eye and are going to be very hansom little girls when older.

I am really happy with all the puppies progress this week in training and social development. I am very confident that the time I have spent with them is really starting to show. Day to day actions are vital at this age, like the mower and whipper sniper. It may sound cruel but they need to have these exposures, half are some what ok with noise. I do not want raise fearful puppies they lead to dogs with behavior problems which can result in an unwanted pet.

Gee most my time is spent cleaning, I have had 2 nights this week where I have gone to bed after midnight. I wash over 10 towels per day as I am constantly changing bedding, I also use training pads. All puppies were wormed yesterday, that was fun I think it was the chocolate longhair girl and the biggest black and tan male ate the liquid wormer no problem and my little Daisy as well. Both Mums and Beng were also given worm tablets, rolled in between a thinly sliced piece of ham they gulp it down with out realising. I find the trick is to give the worming tablet and treat while  the other 2 dogs are around. It creates competition and they don't want to miss out. If I was to give the wormer and treat on separate without the other 2 around they would drop every little crumb of worm and spit it out.

Teeth are coming down and puppies are getting up on their back legs. They are play mouthing each other, I love this stage as they are cute and little playful but mum is still doing her part. I will start introducing puppy foods and milk once those teeth come through, once I start that the easy part is over and mum stops cleaning them :-(.

Wow puppies are opening their eyes they are 15 days old, we are still waiting on the chocolate boy (pup5) to open his eyes. Puppies 6 and 7 I think the boys will open their eyes tomorrow.

We have a few long hairs pop up in these breedings, 3 pups in total appear to be long hairs which was a bit of a unintended surprise. A Chocolate and Tan Girl and 2 black and tan girls are long hairs too. All other puppies are smooth. All parents are mini smooths and there is no long hair in their pedigrees up to the point of when they were imported from overseas.

Dachshund X-ray

We like to have x-rays done, it can let you know how many puppies to expect. Last year they told us Angel was having 3 pups all the same size 1 pup appeared to be larger and to watch out for that one. This information was really handy when whelping. The large pup was born 2nd which was one hurdle down and the third pup was born we knew we could clean up and get some rest.

X-rays can be done once the girls are past 50 days and the pups bones are calcified enough to show up on x-ray. Angel was 1st, we had to x-ray her twice the little wiggler. Showed 4 pups all about the same size, three along the bottom of her belly and one long-ways on her right side. Mark looked and pointed to the screen "could that be one there?" A slight mark on the x-ray of a head and spine lined up next to Angels rib cage, was about three quarters of the size to the others showing. The response was it could be a small undeveloped puppy which had stop growing. Well, I guess its good to know and be prepared.

2nd was Carlie, sweet little thing given the nurses kisses and cuddles. Her x-ray of the puppies were clear and a quick count all along the bottom of her belly 1, 2, 3, 4... 5th one on the top side. They were smaller than Angels pups in size in comparison.

So, we left with a few medical supplies in prep for the girls  / our big days a head for when these 9 possible 10 pups decide to join us in the world.

I like totally feel for my girls right now. Their coats are thinning out, little black hair is every where, so I spoiled my babies by brushing them. It also helps prevent the hair getting all over the place. I like to know how the long-haired breeders cope. We have just over 2 weeks to go we can see the puppies moving inside. We are now in the process of getting the girls setup for nesting for their big day a head.
