Why We Exist

Stronger Together. Better for the Breed.

The Dachshund Alliance was founded on the belief that collaboration creates stronger outcomes for the breed. By bringing together breeders, owners and supporters, we aim to encourage education, transparency and the sharing of knowledge and experience.

Through health initiatives, open discussion and community participation, the Alliance supports informed decision-making and a collective commitment to safeguarding the long-term health, welfare and future of dachshunds.

What We Learned After Backscoring 40 Dachshunds

After several years of participation, breeders reflect on what backscoring 40 dachshunds revealed. From unexpected results to reinforced confidence in established lines, these experiences are helping build a deeper understanding of how screening data can support responsible breeding decisions.

The Alliance maintains an expanding database of Australian Miniature Smooth Dachshund backscore results. Findings are reported in aggregate form to protect the privacy of participating dogs and breeders while helping build a clearer understanding of spinal health within the breed.
Breeding age: <6 years old for females & <8 years old for males.

Research-Informed Insights

Current Projects

COI & Backscore Research

Examining the relationship between genetic diversity and spinal health.
By analysing both COI and backscore data, we hope to better understand how pedigree diversity interacts with spinal health outcomes. This project seeks to identify patterns that may support more informed breeding decisions while preserving valuable bloodlines and genetic diversity within the breed.

Long-Term Backscore Tracking

Following results across related dogs and breeding programs.
By recording backscores over time, we hope to identify patterns that may help breeders make more informed decisions while preserving valuable bloodlines.

Targeted Proactive Breeding

Using data-driven insights to match pairs and reduce risk.
By pairing dogs with complementary radiographic profiles, we actively work to out-select high-risk calcification hotspots in subsequent generations. This project focuses on moving beyond simple scores to implement precision mate selection, stacking the genetic deck in favour of healthier futures for the breed.
