Several years ago, a small group of breeders committed to participating in backscoring programs with a simple objective: to learn more about the dogs they were breeding and the lines they were working with.
Since then, dozens of dachshunds have been screened, creating opportunities to compare expectations with results and explore how additional information can support breeding decisions.
While some outcomes aligned closely with what breeders anticipated based on family history and observation, others challenged long-held assumptions. Dogs expected to score well occasionally produced unexpected results, while others exceeded expectations.
Perhaps the most significant lesson has been the importance of viewing results within a broader context. Backscoring provides valuable information, but breeders consistently reported that it became most useful when considered alongside pedigree knowledge, temperament, structure and long-term health trends within families.
Participants also noted that screening did not always lead to immediate changes in breeding plans. In many cases, results simply added confidence to existing decisions. In others, they prompted further investigation, discussion or a reassessment of future pairings.
As participation continues to grow, the value of shared experiences becomes increasingly important. Every result contributes to a larger body of knowledge that benefits not only individual breeders but the wider dachshund community.
