Backscoring has become one of the most discussed topics in the dachshund community over recent years. As more breeders participate in screening programs and share their experiences, a growing body of practical knowledge is beginning to emerge.
For many breeders, the decision to backscore was motivated by a simple question:
Could additional information help us make better breeding decisions?
The answer has not always been straightforward.
Some results confirmed what breeders expected based on pedigree knowledge, conformation and family history. Other results were surprising, challenging long-held assumptions about particular lines and individual dogs.
What many participants agree on is that health testing is most valuable when viewed as one piece of a much larger picture.
Responsible breeding decisions consider numerous factors including:
- Temperament
- Structure and conformation
- Genetic diversity
- Overall health
- Breed type
- Family history
- Screening results
Backscoring does not provide all the answers, but it can contribute valuable information to the decision-making process.
One of the most encouraging outcomes has been the willingness of breeders to openly discuss both positive and unexpected results. These conversations help build collective knowledge and allow others to learn from real-world experiences.
As participation continues to grow, the Alliance hopes to document these experiences and encourage thoughtful discussion around health testing, transparency and responsible breeding.
